Definition

  • Baniwa of Guainia, or Abane (Avane), is a Maipurean language of Venezuela with a few speakers in Brazil. It is one of several languages in the region called Baniwa. Ethnologue (2009) distinguishes between "Baniva" for the Baniwa of Guainia and "Baniwa" for the Baniwa of Içana, but they are merely spelling variants, and either may be used for either language. Aikhenvald counts ≈ 200 speakers while Ethnologue reports the language is extinct; Ethnologue counts Xie Warekena in Brazil as a dialect of Guarequena rather than of Baniwa as in Aikhenvald, but this only amounts to 10 speakers.
