- Due to his style having been influenced by Italian architecture, it has been suggested that Torralva was Italian. Today it is generally held that he was probably of Spanish descent, perhaps the son of Afonso Fernandes Torralva, a courtier who came to Portugal in 1501 with the Spanish infanta Maria, mother of John III, King of Portugal. Torralva married Catarina, daughter of the architect Francisco de Arruda. Spanish architect, active in Portugal
